State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) in California is now closed for the winter season. The highway originally closed its gates on November 1 ahead of a significant snowstorm that blanketed the Sierras. Sonora Pass is the second District 9 highway to close for the season following the winter closure of State Route 203 at Mammoth Mountain. The Crestview Safety Roadside Rest Area north of Mammoth Lakes is closed for the winter season as well.

State Route 89 (Monitor Pass), which also closed on November 1, will reopen tomorrow, November 15, at noon. Caltrans crews are continuing to remove snow from impacted highways, and five District 9 roads remain in a storm closure. This includes:

  • State Route 168 W at Aspendell
  • State Route 158 N (North June Lake Loop)
  • State Route 120 E (Mono Mills Road)
  • State Route 120 W at the Lee Vining Gate
  • State Route 270 (Bodie Road)

For the latest information on road closures, please visit the Caltrans QuickMap website at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or download the app to your smartphone. You can also call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).

Highway 108 over Sonora Pass leaves Hwy 49 in Sonora, CA, and rolls about 50 miles up to the Tuolumne/Mono County line at 9624′, before dropping 16 miles down to Highway 395 at Sonora Junction north of Bridgeport, CA. Highway 108 is the access to Dodge Ridge Ski Area, Eagle Meadows, Kennedy Meadows, Sonora Pass, and Leavitt Lake, all of which provide jumping-off points for backcountry skiing. Above Kennedy Meadows, this is a steep, winding, narrow, two-lane road.
