After a slow and uncertain start to spring, the Sierra Nevada is delivering a late-season turnaround — and Mammoth Mountain, California, is reaping the benefits.
The California resort reported 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm) of fresh snow in the past 24 hours alone, adding to an impressive April total that now stands at 46 inches (117 cm) — just shy of four feet. The late-season storms have revitalized conditions across the mountain, transforming what had been shaping up as a typical spring fade-out into something far more winter-like.
With the new snowfall, Mammoth currently has more than 100 trails open to skiers and snowboarders, a significant amount of terrain for this time of year. The resort has also confirmed it will remain open through at least Memorial Day weekend, extending the season well into late May and reinforcing its reputation as one of North America’s most reliable late-season destinations.
April can be a transitional month in the Sierra, often marked by warming temperatures and variable conditions. After a difficult season in the West, many feared the worst, however, a series of well-timed storm systems has flipped the script. Instead of soft corn snow and patchy coverage, Mammoth is seeing refreshed surfaces, deeper coverage, and a return to mid-winter conditions at higher elevations.

The late surge is particularly significant for a resort like Mammoth, whose high base elevation and expansive terrain allow it to capitalise on spring snowfall better than most. When storms arrive this late in the season, they tend to stick — especially on north-facing aspects — helping preserve quality skiing weeks after many resorts have already shut down operations.
For skiers and riders, the timing couldn’t be better. Spring skiing typically offers longer days, quieter slopes, and more relaxed conditions, and when paired with fresh snow, it creates a rare combination: winter quality with spring atmosphere.
While it remains to be seen whether additional storms will extend the season even further, the current outlook suggests Mammoth is well-positioned to carry momentum deep into May. For now, the message is clear: after a slow start, spring has firmly arrived in the Sierra, and it’s bringing winter with it.
