Yesterday was fire hot fun at Squaw Valley, CA.

Squaw reported 11″ of new snow on the upper mountain and the upper mountain hadn’t opened since that snow fell.

That snow came with an enormous amount of wind creating wind-buff conditions all over the mountain as well as some wind-scoured spots.

Creamy wind-buff, no lift lines at all, sunshine, and fast turns.

It was a “thinking man’s powder day” at Squaw yesterday.

If you followed where the wind blew the snow in, you were golden.

Ice still poked out of the snow in many spots, but it was mostly obvious and easily avoidable.

Hopefully the 10-24″ of snow forecast for Squaw today will be enough to cover up that lurking ice.

We started the day on Headwall and had a very hard time leaving headwall.

Eventually we zipped over to Mainline Pocket for a quick huck that was fun, but not very soft landing-wise.

A quick hike up the Palisades (National + Kitchen Wall open) revealed great turns off the Kitchen Wall.

Another quick hike out to Broken Arrow with an old friend revealed a new line we’d never skied in our 18-seasons at Squaw.

After that, we ran over to Alpine Meadows for 2 wildly fun lift-accessed backcountry runs in creamy snow.

The snow in the zone we skied wasn’t wind-buffed, it was just fun powder.

The snowpack level is absolutely perfect right now.

Everything is feature-full & playful & wildly fun.
