Squaw Valley Conditions Report: Juneuary

Today was classic Juneuary conditions.  Unfortunately I missed Tahoe’s fleeting good conditions from last week.  I just got back from Japan where I really can’t complain about anything, but regardless of the fact that I was skiing waist deep pow for the last 2 weeks, today was pretty darn fun.  I don’t know if its the fact that the sun is still so low in the sky in January, but even when it was 60ish degrees at the base, the snow at the top of squaw was chalky and fun.

It was definitely a groomer day, but when you ski pow everyday all day in Japan sometimes you begin to miss those days where you arc high speed turns down perfectly smooth and chalky groomers…. (okay not really, all I ever want to do is ski pow.)

Siberia groomer was the best

I was not impressed when I rode the Funi up to the upper mountain.  Sure it looked like there had been some awesome conditions recently, but it looked all baked out.  Furthermore maybe its just that last year was my first year at squaw, but it is still seriously low tide here.  when we get another storm all the lines here will be extra gnarly.  I’m actually kind of excited for that.

Sisters looking gnar

I was by myself all day (sorry for the lack of photos of other skiers..) and started skiing the park under gold coast.  It was great, the jumps were well built, etc… but I’m not much of a park skier and I later realized there was some awesome groomer snow I hadn’t been skiing off Siberia and some great off piste snow from Headwall.
