A standup paddleboarder was attacked by a tiger shark on Saturday off the Big Island of Hawaii. According to CBS News, the victim remains hospitalized today with injuries to one of his arms and a loss of part of one leg.
The victim was paddleboarding with his father at Kukio Beach near Hualalai when the duo were knocked off their boards by the shark. The victimโs name has not been released, but reports say that he is believed to be in his 20s and is a resident of Kukio Golf and Beach Club.
The report says the victim was saved when someone at the lifeguard stand heard yelling for help.
West Hawaii Batt. Chief John Whiteman told CBS News, โThey launched a canoe to some paddleboarders approximately 150 to 200 yards offshore. When they got on scene, they found a shark attack victim in the water and another male on a paddleboard.โ
Witnesses applied tourniquets to the victimโs leg, who was helicoptered to North Hawaii Community Hospital and is currently in critical condition. The beach was reopened on Sunday.
