Steamboat Resort in Colorado has introduced a new concierge-level add-on product this winter, allowing guests to pay extra for dedicated lift line access, valet services, and other high-touch amenities—a move that has drawn both interest and criticism across the ski industry. The True West Pass, which quietly rolled out in December, is a limited-availability daily upgrade that must be purchased in addition to a regular lift ticket or season pass. According to reporting by the Steamboat Pilot & Today, the add-on costs vary using dynamic pricing, ranging from about $150 on slower weekdays to as much as $400 on peak weekend daysfor guests age 13 and older.

Resort communications director Maren Franciosi said in a statement to the newspaper that the pass was developed following guest feedback seeking a more seamless experience.

“The True West Pass is a limited-availability, premium daily add-on—similar to First Tracks—that provides valet parking, dedicated line access at select lifts, a concierge service and a lounge experience,” Franciosi said. She added that availability is capped, with users expected to represent less than 0.5% of lift capacity on peak days at lifts offering priority lanes.

What the Pass Includes

According to Steamboat’s promotional materials and reporting by the Pilot, perks include:

  • Valet parking at the Gondola Transit Center

  • Dedicated lift line entrances at six major lifts

  • Access to a concierge staff member

  • Lounge and locker facilities at Hazie’s

Dynamic pricing also applies to children, with daily surcharges reported at $150-$300 for ages 5-12, and about $25 per day for younger children.

Part of a Broader Industry Trend

The True West Pass mirrors similar premium access products introduced at other Alterra Mountain Company resorts. An Alterra spokesperson confirmed to the Pilot that eight destinations—including Winter Park, Solitude, Sugarbush, Tremblant, and Crystal Mountain—now offer versions of a “Reserve Pass” with priority access features.

“We regularly conduct guest surveys, and a number of skiers and riders are looking to save time and want ease of access,” Alterra spokesperson Kristin Rust told the newspaper.

Alterra does not release sales figures for the products.

Mixed Reaction From Skiers

The concept has sparked debate within the ski community. Critics argue that paid priority access creates a two-tier experience on the slopes.

As reported by the Pilot, a petition opposing a similar pass at Crystal Mountain in Washington had gathered thousands of signatures, with organizers saying priority access risks “alienating the average ski enthusiast.” Supporters, meanwhile, view the product as comparable to other premium travel services that prioritize convenience for those willing to pay extra.

A Growing Shift Toward Tiered Experiences

The rollout reflects a broader shift across the ski industry toward differentiated pricing and experiences—from dynamic lift ticket pricing to premium add-ons aimed at reducing wait times and improving convenience. At Steamboat, the resort says the True West Pass is designed to remain limited in scope, positioning it as a boutique upgrade rather than a mass-market offering.

For now, the program remains in its first season, with Steamboat continuing to monitor demand and guest response following the soft launch earlier this winter.
