‘Subway in the Sky’ to Ease Tahoe Traffic Congestion | Massive Air Gondola Concept from Truckee to 25 Ski Resorts

The recent Sierra snowfall has had skiers heading for the mountains, and with that comes increased traffic which creates major back-ups in cities like Truckee, reports Sacramento CBS.

To help resolve this ever growing issue, Ernie Dambach is part of a group with a novel concept to ease traffic by introducing a new public transportation system, called “subway in the sky.” It’s a proposed massive air gondola that would move people from Truckee to ski resorts without using roads.

“In the cities, we’re used to underground subways,” Dambach said. “We all know what those views are, but a subway in the sky is something that really offers grand vistas, offers a way to get people moved from place to place. We would all wish that we could have that view, that vista as our daily commute.”

The aerial tram would link the city of Truckee to the 25 ski resorts within a ten-mile radius of the city. Supporters claim it would also be another attraction for tourists that would allow locals to avoid traffic and parking problems.

“I don’t know, it might take a while to build, but that would be pretty sweet.” Truckee resident Sean Burwell said.

  1. Why report something so stupid and unrealistic and expensive that it will never happen ? How can a gondola efficiently connect all Lake Tahoe ski resorts ? I count 10 on the north shore including Truckee, even boreal which is way more than 10 miles away from Truckee . 25 ? You have to include heavenly, Kirkwood, Sierra at tahoe . I count 14 ski resorts not including cross country ski centers . 25 ? Even the gondola that is proposed at squaw/alpine is so unrealistic it will probably never happen, how can a gondola connecting all of Lake Tahoe be realistic ?

  2. I think they left out the part about the trams being powered by flying pigs. Or it was published two months and two days early as it’s not yet AFD. Even stretching the 10 miles and counting Alpine and Squaw as 2 areas, I only come up with 12 ski areas (plus 4 cross country places where they are organized enough to charge if they have snow) close to Truckee.
