This is definitely one of the coolest, most core ski areas we’ve ever heard of.  It’s a ski area made by skiers & riders, for skiers & riders.  Not many of these left out there folks.  These guys aren’t selling real estate, damaging huge swaths of natural land, nor trying to get rich in the process.  They’re here because they believe in creating an opportunity to slide on snow at anytime of the year.  What could possibly be more core than that?  A day at Beartooth would be a dream.

Our friend Griffin Post (TGR Athlete) just sent us an email about this ski resort that is only open in the summer called Beartooth Basin (formerly Red Lodge).  We’ve heard of it before, but never really investigated it until today.  The place is clearly legit and would be a crazy fun summer ski/board option this year.  And who doesn’t like Montana &/or Wyoming?

Beartooth Basin has a huge variety of summer terrain options including big mountain skiing, park jumps, rails, racing setups, and bumps ‘n jumps.  All this, at a summer only ski resort in Montana/Wyoming…

Griffin gave us a few quick details of the summer ski resort, Beartooth Basin:

“The goal is always to stay open until the beginning of July, but it really depends on snow and conditions. So I’d say they’re open for roughly 40 days a year.” – Griffin Post

“Beartooth Pass (which accesses the resort) [is closed in winter] so the lifts sit dormant until the end of May, when the road opens. I think they’re one of the few resorts that’s only open in the summer.” – Griffin Post

BEARTOOTH BASIN HISTORY:

Established in 1962, Beartooth Basin has long been a destination for international skiers to hone their skills during the late spring months. While originally organized as a summer racing camp by a group of Austrians, the area has evolved to host a variety of camps, events, and competitions, as well as daily skiing and snowboarding for the general public. From its humble beginnings in racing, Beartooth now offers a unique summer skiing setting, surrounded by wilderness and national forest.

“Beartooth Basin offers a great, wilderness experience mixed in with lift access skiing for big mountain skiers, racers or whoever wants to improve their skiing skills in the off season. These lifts were put in by a group of Austrians that were Olympic athletes and racers that trained across the world, so there’s a great historic value along with having good fun and keeping summer skiing alive.” – Beartooth president and operations manager Austin Hart.

  1. They also have a big mountain comp there.

The big-mountain/slopestyle competition will take place Saturday, June 8th, 2013, and includes both amateur and pro divisions skiing top-to-bottom laps on a course featuring everything from cornice drops to park jumps and rails.

  2. red lodge international summer ski resort. Place is surely hard core. You’re not gonna meet someone who isn’t into skiing there.
