SKI Magazine awards Sun Valley for Second Year in a Row, and Thanksgiving Opening Day News Announced

Sun Valley Resort, Idaho, the original North American destination ski resort is proud to announce it has been named as the top ski resort in North America for the second year running, in SKI Magazine’s 2021/22 Annual Ski Resort Awards and Reader’s Poll.

“We are beyond excited to be recognized as the #1 ski resort in North America for the second year in a row. This is a true testament to the leadership of Tim Silva and the legacy he’s left for us at Sun Valley Resort, and I am honored to carry the torch into the near season ahead.  Huge thanks goes out to our amazing Sun Valley team and our local community for creating the extraordinary atmosphere our guests love. This recognition by our guests and SKI Magazine readers is an acknowledgment of the incredible community we have here in Sun Valley. It’s the partnership between Sun Valley Resort and the surrounding community that makes every guest feel welcome and special. We are filled with pride today and can’t wait for another great season here in Sun Valley.”

– Resort Vice President and General Manager, Pete Sonntag

The annual Resort Guide is based on the results of the Reader Resort Survey, the most comprehensive, trusted, and longest-running rankings in the industry. Sun Valley ranked No. 1 in Grooming, Lifts, Service, Dining, Lodging, Family, Local Flavor, and Overall Satisfaction.

Sun Valley was named Top Ski Resort in North America in the 2020/21 rankings, and the Sunrise expansion of over 380 acres of expert terrain, new Broadway high-speed quad chairlift, updated dining options, snowmaking, family-friendly activities, and strong community spirit helped secure the accolade for this season as well. This season, guests can expect even more varied terrain with additional acreage of gladed skiing made possible by the Healthy Forest Initiative work from this past summer.

Sun Valley is also excited to announce that its 86th season commences on Thanksgiving Day, November 25th, weather dependent. Hot cocoa, branded collector’s mugs, branded neckwear, and other giveaways will be handed out at River Run base throughout the morning, along with live music entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Sunny the Bear will be sure to make an appearance to commemorate opening day and another massive win for Sun Valley Resort.

Guests can expect to see some updates and improvements this year, including a new servery at River Run that will assist guest flow. Local foodie favorite Konditorei has been added to River Run, so guests can enjoy fresh coffee and pastries at both River Run and Warm Springs this season and the Wok and Bowl station that will feature delicious Asian cuisine. The Resort will continue to have bag storage this year at River Run, as well as an Apres Bar outside the Lodge so that guests can choose to remain in the fresh air for delicious post-skiing treats.

As the Resort prepares for the 21/22 winter season, the safety, health, and well-being of guests, staff, and the local community remain a top priority. Protocols and procedures will continue to align with the guidance and scientific expertise from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Idaho Department of Health, and Blaine County Health Department.

Per city ordinances in Sun Valley and Ketchum, masks are required in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status. The Resort will not require masks outdoors, including while in lift lines, on lifts, or in the Gondola but are encouraging guests to physically distance when possible. Guests are encouraged to continue to “Know Before You Go” and check the Sun Valley App or website for updates.
