On September 27, 2021, the United States Forest Service (USFS’) granted Canadian company KORE Mining a Categorical Exclusion to drill at Hot Creek Geologic Site, California, to look for gold. Hot Creek Geologic Site is located 10 miles east of Mammoth Lakes and is a world-class fishing, angling, and hiking destination, as well as the ancestral homeland of the Kootzaduka Tribe which still utilizes and inhabits the area today. Non-profit organization ’No Hot Creek Mine’ was founded immediately after the USFS signed the exclusion.
After a recent battle in court this summer, the project has been temporarily halted, however No Hot Creek Mine needs your help today to put pressure on USFS to reverse the exclusion once and for all. The organization has partnered with local filmmaker and photographer, Ethan Fichtner, to produce a short film to raise further awareness about the proposed mine at Hot Creek. Ethan has been integral to its campaign since the beginning, capturing the power of grassroots activism through visual storytelling.
This film will tell the story of No Hot Creek Mine’s campaign, the proposed exploratory drilling at Hot Creek, and the threat of gold mining in the Eastern Sierra as a whole. Visual storytelling, through film, is a powerful tool to raise further awareness about extractive industry and inspire further resistance against foreign mining companies. However, in order to create such a film, No Hot Creek Mine needs your financial support, so please consider donating to this worthy cause.
