While the ski season in Australia wrapped up almost a month ago, winter doesn’t seem quite ready to let go. As much of the country heads for the coast and summer temperatures start to climb, the Snowy Mountains saw an unexpected return to white this week.

Perisher, Thredbo, Mount Hotham, Falls Creek, and Mount Buller all woke up to a fresh dusting of 10–20 centimeters (4–8 inches) of snow between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning (November 4–5). The surprise storm blanketed chairlifts, village rooftops, and even some hiking trails, turning the usually green spring slopes back into a winter wonderland — at least for a day or two.

Resorts were quick to share their excitement on social media, posting photos of snow-covered runs that looked more like mid-August than early November. While lifts are long since closed, many locals and mountain staff couldn’t resist stepping outside to enjoy the novelty of snow falling as the calendar inches toward summer.

At Perisher, Australia’s largest ski area, the late snowfall capped off what was one of its best seasons in recent years—a winter marked by consistent snowfalls and a strong run of mid-season powder days. Thredbo and Falls Creek also reported impressive snow depth totals during the 2025 season, with cold temperatures stretching deep into September and early October.

Though the mountains will soon return to their off-season rhythm, filled with hikers, mountain bikers, and summer festivals, everyone took delight in the surprise spell of late-spring snowfall.
