On Monday a group of children were playing in a swimming pool at Smuggler’s Notch Resort, splashing around in the sunshine when they all heard a ‘Boom!’ and turned to see an SUV landing on top of their group of friends.
Local news station NBC5 News reported that sometime on Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., an out of control driver with New Hampshire license plates slammed through the fence outside of the pool area and submerged their vehicle in the occupied pool. One of the children, 9-year-old Joseph Sage, had his head pinned under one of the vehicle’s tires before his father jumped in the pool and pulled him and another young girl out from underneath the car. “I have a scratch on my head from it,” Sage told NBC5. “I have scratches on my finger. My side hurts a little.”
None of the children were seriously injured and only suffered minor injuries. Witnesses told NBC5 that they saw a Vermont State Police trooper placing a person in handcuffs and putting them in the back of their cruiser, who they said to be the driver of the SUV.
Steve Clokey, Smugger’s Notch chief marketing officer, commented on the incident, reminding people that summertime is still a busy period for the resort, which is often filled with guests.

“We want to make sure that people are aware that we’ve got a lot of things happening here,” Clokey told NBC5. “We’ve got bikes, golf carts, kids. All the reasons why you need to be on top of how you drive here.”
At this time, police are still investigating how exactly the driver crashed their vehicle into the pool. Police said that because of the driver’s age (likely because they are under 18) their identity will not be released at this time.
