Snowboarding Has a Beginner Problem — Can a Different Way of Teaching Help?

Snowboarding exploded in popularity during the late 1990s and early 2000s before reaching its modern peak around the 2010-2011 season. Since then, participation has gradually declined, prompting ongoing discussions about how the sport can attract—and, more importantly, retain—new riders. More than a decade after Outside Magazine journalist Mark Peruzzi famously asked, “Can Snowboarding Be Saved?”, many of the same challenges remain. Among the biggest is beginner retention.

A first day on a snowboard is often filled with repeated falls, frustration, and fatigue. For many newcomers, that experience determines whether they return for a second lesson — or never snowboard again. Reducing unnecessary falls while helping beginners build confidence may be one of the industry’s greatest opportunities for long-term growth.

After more than 20 years working in snowboard schools in Ukraine and Russia, snowboard instructor and educator Yuriy Manuylov began questioning whether traditional beginner instruction was asking too much of first-time riders too soon. “People would come to me with the same request: teach me how to stop and turn in one lesson,” Manuylov says. “But many beginners were leaving disappointed because their expectations didn’t match their experience.”

According to Manuylov, beginners are often expected to develop balance, edge control, speed management, coordination, and decision-making simultaneously — all while standing sideways on a board sliding downhill for the first time. “The challenge is that students naturally want immediate results,” he says. “But an instructor’s responsibility is not only to satisfy the immediate request—it is to understand what the student actually needs to succeed.”

That question ultimately led Manuylov to develop Snowboarding Without Falls (SWF), a teaching framework that shifts the focus of the first lesson away from riding downhill and toward developing balance, body awareness, movement patterns, and confidence before introducing more complex riding skills. “What if the goal of the first lesson is not to stop or turn?” Manuylov asks.

Rather than combining balance, sliding, turning, and speed control from the beginning, the SWF framework breaks learning into 23 progressive exercises. Students first become comfortable moving with the snowboard and understanding how it responds before progressing to downhill riding. The goal is not to eliminate falls — an impossible task in any action sport — but to reduce unnecessary falls during a beginner’s first experience, helping students build confidence instead of fear. “Without a strong foundation, you can build only a shed, not a palace,” Manuylov says. “What are we trying to build?”

According to Manuylov, students who complete the progression often arrive at their second lesson with improved balance and body awareness, allowing them to begin linking their first S-turns. A third lesson then focuses on refining turns and practicing emergency stopping techniques. While every student progresses differently, Manuylov believes separating foundational skills from downhill riding creates a more positive learning experience.

He points to one snowboard school that adopted the methodology, where second-lesson retention reportedly increased from 7.88% to 30.34% over several seasons while beginner injuries also declined. Although those results have not yet been independently evaluated across the broader industry, Manuylov believes they demonstrate the potential value of further testing.

Over the past three years, Manuylov has introduced the SWF framework to snowboard schools, resorts, and industry organizations across the United States. He has shared his book, Snowboarding Without Falls, and is seeking opportunities to formally evaluate the methodology through pilot programs.

Rather than replacing existing teaching systems, Manuylov believes new approaches should be tested alongside established methods and measured through objective results. “Maybe this method worked in a smaller resort environment and won’t translate perfectly everywhere,” he says. “But if it does work, it has the potential to reduce injuries, improve beginner confidence, and help more people stay connected with snowboarding.”

Whether SWF ultimately becomes part of mainstream snowboard instruction remains to be seen. But with participation still below its peak and beginner retention continuing to challenge the industry, finding better ways to help first-time riders succeed may be one of snowboarding’s most important opportunities.
