The Double-Edged Sword of Climbing Chalk

chalk on wall

There is a double-edged sword of climbing, and all outdoor activities really. The world is covered in beautiful and well-preserved parks, forests, and untouched swaths of land. These lands attract hundreds of thousands who want to experience the beauty, but every mile driven and hour flown is slowly destroying the lands we seek out. Slowly but surely altering the world’s climate […]

Jackson Hole Conditions Report, January 3rd, 2018: It’s good!

My first day (ever!) in Jackson was one for the books. The mountain is huge, steep, and above all else fun. I’m very, very glad I made the 12 hour drive from Tahoe. We started out the day by looking into Corbetts (which was closed), and then hitting the Alta chutes on the way to Sublette. Snow was a cold […]

Alta Conditions Report – Welcome to Junuary!

Welcome to Junuary, where it’s sunny and 55 degrees at 8000ft! The snow is nice and soft on all but high north faces and there are onsies abound. Many thinner ridgelines have lost some snow due to wind and sun, but East faces (ie Backside) are skiing great in the morning, West great in the afternoon (ie West Rustler) and steep North faces (Hi Boy) are smooth, fast and […]

Depending what aspects you decide to check out, you can expect to find recycled powder, corn, corny chowder, firm crusts, and wind blown chalk. Just because it’s variable doesn’t mean it’s bad, however. Given the fact that it’s been a few solid weeks since the last real storm, the skiing is damn fine if you know what you’re looking […]

Sugar Bowl Conditions Report: Fun Chalky Snow | Photo Tour:

mogul run

One issue that keeps coming up at Squaw and Alpine is icy groomers. Many people ski and ride a run of man made snow and the run turns icy. Sugar Bowl isn’t experiencing this. Many of Sugar Bowl’s runs are natural snow only and they’ve been left to nature. Lots of fun chalky moguls made Sugar Bowl a good time today. The groomers aren’t icy either. Sugar Bowl has the chairs Lincoln, Christmas Tree, White Pine, Jerome Hill, & Nob Hill open. […]
