5 Skiers Die, 1 Severely Injured in 2 French Avalanches Yesterday 3 people are confirmed dead and 7 are currently missing after an avalanche struck 10 hikers in the French Alps yesterday at 3pm. The avalanche occurred in France’s Ecrins National Park near Pelvoux only 120 km north of the tragic Germanwings crash last week. The avalanche hit a group of 10 hikers and their guide. 8 People Die in 4 Avalanches 1 Day in Switzerland: 8 People died in 4 separate avalanches in 1 day Switzerland yesterday, Saturday, January 31st, 2015. This brings the total avalanche deaths in Switzerland this winter to 17. In the Alps this winter there have been a staggering 49 avalanches deaths. Two US Ski Team Members Killed in Avalanche in Austria Today 20-year-old Ronnie Berlack from Vermont and 19-year-old Bryce Astle from Utah were freeskiing off-piste between races on 3,056-meter Gaislachkogel peak with 4 others when an avalanche struck and buried them.
