Everest Climbing Route To Change After 16 Sherpa Die in Avalanche Last April, 16 Sherpa died in a large avalanche while working on the traditional Everest climbing route. It was the single deadliest day in Everest history. That horrible event triggered a Sherpa strike that shut down the Nepali side of the mountain for the season. Video of the Massive Avalanche That Killed 15 People on Mt. Everest Early yesterday morning an avalanche came down on a group of Sherpa on Mt. Everest at around 21,000 feet.
