Chile Surf & Culture Report: Barreling Waves & Penguins I spent the first two weeks of July surfing at Punta de Lobos, Chile. I surfed with two penguins on my second day. The water is crystal clear, cold (56ยบF), and full of waves. This may be one of the most consistent waves in the world since a large point to the south of the wave blocks the prevailing south winds. The only thing that ruins the wave here is a north wind, which we unfortunately got a healthy dose of this July. When I was here last October, the wave was great 20 out of 21 days. Chile Surf & Culture Report: Earthquakes & Huge Waves Earthquakes… Four earthquakes over magnitude 5.0 Just last night… I have still have PTSD from California’s 7.1 magnitude Loma Prieta quake in 1989… There have been eight earthquakes here in Chile over magnitude 5.0 since I arrived here two weeks ago… I’m living in a building made of shipping containers… I’ve run out of the house at least 4 times… The surf at Punta de Lobos, Chile has been spot on. Chile Surf & Culture Report: Surfing with Penguins… Yesterday, I surfed with Penguins. Three of them. I was waiting for a wave and three of ’em popped out of the water and just stared at me. I stared back and paddled a bit closer in awe. After about 3 minutes, they dove, never to be seen again… The coolest thing that’s happened to me in surfing. Ok, now it’s time to get more objective. Tuesday was about head high and smooth and great. Wednesday was about the same but maybe even more fun. Yesterday, things backed off a bit and I surfed the wrong tide (low tide is better here) but still had fun […] Surf Miles Clark | October 10, 2014 2 Comments
