The ski season in California has been off to an unreal start and yesterday sweetened the pot bringing a foot plus of perfect hero snow. The mountains were very much alive first thing in the morning, but with the hard work of patrol we were able to get KT by 9:30 and the rest of the mountain soon there after. […]
Things are starting to come alive at Squaw, with upwards of two feet of new snow in the upper elevations and a solid foot and a half at the base. With the new snow came expanded terrain options, the kangaroo kicker, and lots of smiles. The Good Trees under Squaw Creek All of Shirley Lake, from the Shirley Chutes to […]
It has been far too long since skiers in Tahoe have had the pleasure of a genuine powder face shot, but after this weekend’s storm skiers all across the basin were able to get in deep and remember the feeling. The video above chronicles some of the goods that were to be found on Mt. Rose Saturday morning and Squaw Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Seeing snow coating the trees in town once again simple feels right, now if only Miracle March will deliver and keep bringing the snow!
For the first time this year, Tahoe caught a break and received double the amount of snow forecasted over the weekend. With easily two feet of snow on the upper mountain, the skiing as well as the vibe came alive at Squaw. Snow fell most of Saturday and Sunday brought intermittent clouds and deep snow. As to be expected, the masses were out and hungry for pow but the lines (save Granite Chief on Sunday), remained manageable. On Saturday the only things to open on the upper mountain were Siberia and Shirley (as well as the beginner terrain) […]
It’s starting to get hard to remember, but the start of the season at Squaw really was ripping good. The above video by Aaron Fox proves just this, as he and friends rip around the upper mountain finding fund lines and soft landings. Pillows are popped and flips are had in Granite, while some of the best turns in years were found off Hog’s Back and North Bowl early in the season. […]
With the winds picking up as the storm approaches Tahoe, Squaw saw some chalky goodness today which has been conspicuously absent thus far in the season. In particular, the top half of Shirley Lake was harboring some sweet and smooth turns in places (while in other places she was harboring some sporadic and rather icy bumps). Lift Maintenance has also […]
Just as was predicted, today started out nice and wet at Squaw Valley. With rain all the way to the top, things were looking (and feeling) a bit brutal. The rain started overnight and the meltdown has been fast and furious, with the little natural snow we have quickly receding. However, things are looking up moving into tonight and tomorrow […]
We were all starting to worry, but it turns out the sky over California can still precipitate. Squaw received a few inches of new snow on Saturday night bringing a very welcome white blanket to the valley and making Sunday the deepest day of 2014. However, it was nowhere near the dump we so desperately need at this point. Highlights […]
