The Caldor Fire in northern California has grown to become one of the largest and most destructive fires in the state’s history. It is currently burning through 218,459 acres in the El Dorado, Alpine, and Amador counties, and is just 53% contained. The fire has been burning for nearly a month and there are 50 different fire response crews on the scene fighting.

As of September 10, 2021, the Caldor Fire has destroyed at least 1,000 residential and commercial structures, including the home of  “Tahoe legend” Jim Bitner. Not only does Bitner work ski patrol at Sierra-at-Tahoe, but he also teaches wilderness courses and is thoroughly involved in the Tahoe community.

In response to Bitner’s home being destroyed, his friends and locals of the Tahoe community have started a GoFundMe campaign. The original goal was to raise $15,000 for Jim, but the donations have nearly doubled that, totaling $27,479 so far after only seven days.

The GoFundMe campaign describes Jim Bitner as the quintessential Tahoe resident who pours life into his community:

“If you know Jim, then you know he is an independent, self-sufficient guy. He hasn’t asked for any assistance. This fundraiser has been made by his friends who do what friends do…take care of each other.

If you wish to donate, know that 100% of proceeds will go directly to Jim.”

The Caldor Fire is still destroying homes and commercial buildings, so, unfortunately, there are many other people besides Jim who are currently facing similar difficulties. Donating to Bitner’s GoFundMe campaign will directly help one of the most respected individuals in Tahoe restore his life. Additionally, there are many other GoFundMe campaigns set up with the goal of helping victims of the Caldor Fire. Donating even a few dollars can make the world’s difference to those affected by Caldor.
