UPDATED August 14, 2025 – 11 a.m. PST – Tamarack Resort has just reached out to SnowBrains with the following update:
“Fire crews made strong progress on containment efforts yesterday and continue active firefighting operations today. After reviewing today’s planned firefighting activities and current air quality conditions, we have made the decision to suspend all resort operations for the day.
The safety of those fighting the fires at or near our resort, as well as our guests, employees, and community, remains our highest priority. We are working closely with local authorities and will resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters, emergency personnel, and our dedicated team members who continue to work tirelessly to protect Tamarack Resort and the surrounding area.”
August 14, 2025 – 6:35 a.m. PST – Tamarack Resort in Idaho has suspended all resort operations indefinitely due to a rapidly expanding wildfire known as the Rock Fire. The blaze, which ignited from lightning on August 12, 2025, has scorched approximately 2,000 acres south of the resort, prompting heightened safety measures and evacuations in the nearby community.

On August 13, the resort initially suspended all on-mountain activities, including lift-served skiing, cross-country trails, ziplining, and access to the Mid Mountain Lodge, prioritizing guest and staff safety amid increasing fire activity. Other amenities, such as golf at Osprey Meadows, the Tamarack Marina, watersports, dining outlets, and the spa, remained open before the full shutdown was announced later that day.
“Out of an abundance of caution due to nearby fire activity, Tamarack Resort has closed all on-mountain, marina, and golf activities for today. This is not an official evacuation — we have simply reduced staff to minimum staffing levels, including on-mountain personnel.
Tamarack is fully cooperating with local authorities and fire personnel, who are dropping retardant on the mountain as needed. Snowmaking guns are running to help reduce risk, and our emergency response plan is in place. We sincerely thank the firefighters and local authorities for their hard work and dedication in keeping our community safe.

By the afternoon of August 13, the wildfire had grown significantly, fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions. Firefighters, deploying a robust suppression strategy, are concentrated on containing the northern and eastern edges of the fire. Ground crews comprise multiple Hotshot crews, handcrews, engines, and bulldozers, supported by widespread aerial firefighting assets including large air tankers capable of dropping thousands of gallons of retardant, water scoopers, and helicopters.
The Valley County Sheriff’s Office has issued a “READY” stage evacuation notice for specific zones along West Mountain near Tamarack Resort. This advisory urges residents to prepare for potential evacuation by securing pets, fueling vehicles, and planning to leave if the threat escalates. Updates are available through the Sheriff’s Facebook page, official county channels, and the Boise National Forest’s social media.
Tamarack Resort President Scott Turlington confirmed precautionary evacuations for some staff and the operation of the resort’s snowmaking system, capable of spraying water, as a protective measure. The nearby areas had previously experienced wildfire threats, but calm wind conditions so far have prevented structural damage.

The complex wildfire response continues under the coordination of the U.S. Forest Service, the Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association, and local fire departments. A Complex Incident Management Team was mobilized to bring additional resources and strategic oversight to this large-scale incident.
