The American College of Sports Medicine’s 2025 American Fitness Index highlights the nation’s healthiest cities, based on data from more than 30 fitness indicators. The Fitness Index ranks cities on a mix of factors, from access to parks, recreational facilities, and bike infrastructure to rates of physical activity and chronic health conditions. But another element that stands out in several top-ranked places is their access to outdoor recreation, including nearby mountains that provide an extra edge for active lifestyles.

Here are the top nine fittest cities in America, counting down from No. 9:

9. Sacramento, California

The California capital earns its spot thanks to robust park access, farmers markets, and low rates of smoking. Outdoor activity thrives with bike trails along the American River Parkway. For mountain lovers, the Sierra Nevada is just over an hour away, opening the door to skiing at Tahoe in winter and hiking peaks in summer.

8. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has steadily climbed the rankings, supported by a growing network of trails, green spaces, and improved air quality. The BeltLine provides miles of running and cycling paths. While it’s not near major ski mountains, Atlanta residents make fitness work through year-round outdoor accessibility and community wellness programs.

7. Madison, Wisconsin

6. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis boasts one of the most extensive park systems in the country, with trails that stay busy year-round despite the cold. In winter, frozen lakes and groomed trails turn the city into a cross-country skiing haven. Its blend of outdoor culture and indoor fitness infrastructure keeps residents consistently among the nation’s healthiest.

5. Denver, Colorado

Denver lives up to its “Mile High City” nickname with high rates of physical activity and a strong culture of outdoor living. The Rockies rise just 30 minutes away, providing easy access to world-class skiing, hiking, and biking. The proximity to big mountains cements Denver’s reputation as a hub for both fitness and adventure.

4. San Francisco, California

San Francisco thrives on walkability, bike access, and fresh, local food options. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Presidio provide urban trails with spectacular views. Within an hour, residents can reach the Marin Headlands or Mt. Tamalpais for steep climbs and rugged runs, giving city dwellers a taste of mountain fitness.

3. Seattle, Washington

Seattle scores high for physical activity rates, farmers markets, and public health initiatives. The city also sits within striking distance of the Cascades—less than an hour to trailheads for hiking, climbing, and skiing. This easy mountain access complements the city’s strong park network and makes outdoor adventure part of everyday fitness.

2. Washington, D.C.

D.C. ranks high thanks to its bike lanes, public transit, and abundant green spaces like Rock Creek Park. Strong health outcomes and relatively low obesity rates keep it near the top of the index. While not close to big mountains, the city’s culture of movement—from running on the National Mall to cycling on the Capital Crescent Trail—keeps residents active.

1. Arlington, Virginia

For the seventh consecutive year, Arlington takes the crown as the fittest city in America. With nearly universal access to parks, high rates of exercise, and low rates of chronic disease, Arlington leads across the board. While not a mountain town, its focus on walkability, bike access, and community health sets the national standard for fitness.

Cities With Skiing in About an Hour

  • Seattle → Alpental (55 min): Quick escape to the Cascades with steep terrain and dependable snowfall.

  • Washington, D.C. → Liberty Mountain (1 hr 20 min): Small, local slopes within a short drive keep the ski legs fresh.

  • Arlington, VA → Massanutten (1 hr 40 min): Not far into the Blue Ridge, a full-service resort with both skiing and waterpark.

Weekend Warrior Cities

  • Sacramento → Tahoe (2 hrs): The capital city is a gateway to Palisades Tahoe, Heavenly, and Kirkwood.

  • San Francisco → Tahoe (3 hrs): Bay Area skiers pile into cars on Friday nights for powder weekends in the Sierra.

From Sacramento’s ski-weekend lifestyle to Arlington’s walkable streets, the fittest U.S. cities prove a simple truth: outdoor access is a strong driving force for good health. Whether it’s walking, climbing, cycling, Nordic skiing, or powder days, the overlap between fitness and outdoor recreation is impossible to ignore.
