Top 11 U.S. Big Mountain Ski Resorts: Opinion From a Freestyle Skier

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, open more terrain, big mountain

Lists are inherently wrong no matter how you look at them. There will almost always be something to argue about. So why make them at all? Well…I love a good debate.

There are no set factors that I decided to rate each resort on. The majority of this list are resorts that I have had experience skiing and I ranked them based on “general feel”. You might also be asking yourself what I mean exactly by “Big Mountain Skiing”. For starters, it does not necessarily mean resorts with large expanses of terrain or high verticals. Think of the Freeride World Tour (If you have not seen the tour check it out here). It is a style of freestyle skiing that encompasses skiing steep and technical faces while also showing off-air and style.

The Wasatch County Council heard an update at their meeting last week on the proposed work for the new Mayflower Mountain Resort (MMR).

Although skiing is not targeted to open until late 2024, the New York-based real estate firm Extell Development Company (EDC) is moving ahead with construction on some of the trails; 14 skiing and 11 hiking and biking trails, to be exact. These trails only mark the beginning of the process. There’s estimated to have close to 1,000 skiable acres with 15 lifts and one gondola when it is finally completed.

How To Tell The Difference Between An East Coast Skier and A West Coast Skier

Fresh snow for Killington
A good day at The Beast of the East. Photo courtesy of Killington Resort.

Ever since I was pizza-ing and french fry-ing, I’ve been skiing on the Ice Coast. Blaring snow guns, granular ice, and bracing for impact are just a few images that come to mind. It wasn’t until I was nine years old that I got my first taste of West Coast skiing. After that trip out to The Bird, I was forever changed. I couldn’t get enough of the world of endless pow and fat planks that lay beyond the East Coast.

I love both coasts and their mountains for different reasons. Having a boot in both worlds has allowed me to quickly spot a true East Coast skier from a true West Coast skier. So, here are the top five differences between the Beasts of the East and West Coast Best Coasts.

Bob Salem has made history by being the first person in the 21st Century to push a peanut eleven miles up Pikes Peak with a contraption taped to his nose. This ambitious goal was reached after just under seven days of determination.

Bob started his journey at 9 am on July 9th on Barr Trail and officially finished the push around sunrise on July 15th. The previous record was around eight days. A ceremonial finish took place at 10 am, where Bob was greeted by cheers, a letter from the City of Manitou Springs, and a letter from Mayor John Suthers with the City of Colorado Springs.

  1. I’ll bet you $100 the site visits are decreasing. Not only do you repost stories often, now you repost what we’ve already seen that week? Then there is that sidebar with top 10 trending. What’s the difference between top trending and top weekly? Don’t get me started on the depressing daily topics now. Fire, Fire, Fire, Drought, someone died and just to stay on topic, let’s throw in a South America story. The dude on the motorcycle, splitboarding across Canada & the US was the best thing we’ve read on this site in months. More Original Content, please.
