Do you love carving on fresh corduroy first thing in the morning? Do you live for sustained, top-to-bottom runs—the kind where you can push the speed, hop back on the lift, and do it again? If you answered yes to these questions, you may love groomers.

To be clear and definite about what this ranking system entails, here are the three essential criteria for our list:

  • Continuous top-to-bottom runs: Must be substantial, uninterrupted descent, serviced by a single lift.
  • Challenging pitch and steepness: The run must deliver a true test of speed and edge control
  • Reliable Grooming: Must be groomed daily or very frequently

Without further ado, here are the 5 most challenging and rewarding groomed runs in the United States you absolutely have to try.

#5: Gros Ventre – Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, WY

JMHR

Starting our list at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in the Tetons of Wyoming is Gros Ventre. Offloading skier’s right from the Bridger Gondola, this upper section, double blue-rated trail is a great warm-up before diving into more expert terrain JMHR has to offer. This trail, according to Trail Forks, is 1.4 miles long and features many long and steep drops as it winds down to a more mellow blue rating toward the base at Teton Village.

While JMHR has many more challenging runs, including groomers, Gros Ventre’s length and ability to be lapped off the Bridger Gondola cannot be overlooked. Need a break to warm up, eat a pocket PB&J, or get a plate of chicken fingers? Look no further than the Rendezvous Lodge at the summit of the Bridger Gondola and be treated to beautiful views of the Teton Mountains before heading right back to Gros Ventre.

#4: Ambush – Big Sky Resort, MT

With 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, it’s no wonder Big Sky Resort has found its way on this list with Ambush. Ambush, a double-blue rated trail, stretches just under a mile long according to Trail Forks and is accessed directly from the summit of Big Sky’s Ramcharger 8 lift. This eight-person lift can transport 3,600 skiers per hour to access Andesite Mountain and the smaller Spirit Mountain.

Much like JMHR’s Gros Ventre, Big Sky has a plethora of trails that are more difficult than Ambush, but none that can match the convenience and visibility approaching the Mountain Village base. Off the Ramcharger 8, Ambush transitions quickly from a narrow cat track into a steep and challenging proving ground that is fully visible as you approach the Mountain Village base. Complete a lap on Ambush, hop back on a heated seat with a blue bubble on Ramcharger, and do it all over again, or go explore more of what Big Sky has to offer.

#3: White Heat – Sunday River Resort, ME

Checking in at Donny Pelletier’s (Maine’s finest athlete) favorite spot, Sunday River is White Heat. White Heat, a steep and challenging double-black, is located to the skier’s right off the Quad lift of the same name on White Cap Mountain. While the shortest trail on this list, it more than makes up for it with sheer steepness. With an average pitch of 27 degrees and a max of 35 degrees at its steepest point according to Ski Bums, White Heat demands respect.

Outside of being Donny’s favorite trail at his favorite resort, White Heat has plenty of other reasons for being on this list. According to Avant Ski, White Heat is the longest, steepest, widest, lift-serviced double black diamond on the East Coast. With Maine and Sunday River having a banner start to this ski season in terms of snow, White Heat is the perfect trail to take on this season.

#2: Bushwacker – Telluride Ski Resort, CO

Next up on the list is Bushwacker at Telluride. Bushwacker at Telluride is a true black diamond thrill ride. Measuring 1.2 miles, it holds the distinction of being the highest elevation groomed run in North America. This steep run is often crowd-free due to the challenging angle it runs on and the other amazing terrain options off the Plunge Lift.

It is serviced by the new and improved Plunge Lift, which was updated in 2023. This new high-speed quad takes just 6.5 minutes, two times faster than its predecessor, to get to the top of Bushwacker.  With scenic views of the San Juan Mountain Range and an expert rating, Bushwacker delivers on all the promises that thrill seekers have to offer.

#1: Warm Springs – Sun Valley Resort, ID

Holding the top spot on the list is Warm Springs from Sun Valley Resort in Idaho. Celebrating its 90th season this year, Sun Valley is long known as the go-to destination for fast and steep groomers. Warm Springs is no exception; it is the combination of three separate trails that are all connected: Upper-, Mid-, and Lower-Warm Springs. It has a total vertical drop of 3,140 feet and is approximately 1.8 miles, according to a spokesperson representing Sun Valley.

Fun fact: Warm Springs was the host of North America’s first international ski race: the Harriman Cup in 1940. Since that time, Sun Valley has only enhanced its most popular run. In 2023, the Warm Springs Enhancement Project was opened to the public. The new and improved Challenger lift whisks skiers 3,138 feet, the largest vertical rise chairlift in North America, in just 8 minutes. With an average pitch of 32 degrees and maxing out at a heart-stopping 41 degrees, Warm Springs truly sets itself apart from the competition.

Honorable Mention

Calamity Jane – Big Sky Resort

Golden Eagle – Beaver Creek Resort

Andy’s Encore & Collage – Copper Mountain

Amphitheatre – Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Regulator Johnson – Snowbird

Grand Review – Vail Mountain

These five trails—Gros Ventre, Ambush, White Heat, Bushwacker, and Warm Springs—don’t just offer great grooming; they offer a high-quality challenge. They are the steepest, longest, and most reliably maintained proving grounds for skiers who love groomed runs. Now that you know the top 5 most challenging and rewarding groomed runs in the U.S., it’s time to head out and put yourself to the test.

It’s understood that everyone has their favorite groomed runs, so for those that are not listed, we want to hear about it (and how wrong this list is!)

  1. Warm Springs is good but when it’s groomed Limelight next to it is more direct, steeper, and more open.

  2. My beef with #5 Gros Ventre is that it crosses several traverses so you can’t get to full speed whereas the others you can let it rip. I recall zipping down not knowing traverses were coming and having to slam on the brakes. The traverses will also give you a good jump if you don’t check your speed.
