A cruiser for the North Salt Lake Police Department captured dash cam footage of a passenger train barreling through a tractor trailer midway through crossing some train tracks during yesterdays snowstorm. The trailer behind the truck was smashed in half with boxes strewn all over the scene. Fortunately, neither of the drivers in the truck were injured nor were any of the 82 passengers and crew of the train.
Utah Transit Authority (UTA) released results of their preliminary investigation today. They state that the railroad crossing gates and arms were up and not flashing during the time of the incident. Reports of power outages and severe icing had occurred in the area prior to the incident with the UTA responding to fix the problems because of traffic backups. Shortly after the crews arrival to the scene the crossing gates went up and that was when the accident occurred.
“The agency has never had an accident like this before, and UTA is investigating why and how it happened to ensure it doesn’t occur again.”
