A weekend climb on one of the world’s most famous peaks has ended in heartbreak. Two mountaineers lost their lives on Sunday, July 12, 2026, after suffering a fatal fall while descending the iconic Matterhorn near Zermatt, Switzerland.

The climbers were making their way down the mountain’s popular Hörnli ridge (known locally as the Hörnligrat). Zermatt: Fatal Fall on the Matterhorn

On Sunday, July 12, 2026, two mountaineers fell to their deaths on the Matterhorn.

Around 11 a.m., two mountaineers were descending the Matterhorn via the Hörnli ridge when they fell, for reasons that remain to be determined, while they were at an altitude of approximately 4,030 meters.

A third person, who witnessed the accident, immediately raised the alarm. Rescue services, deployed by the Valais Cantonal Rescue Organization, were dispatched to the scene aboard an Air Zermatt helicopter. Upon their arrival, rescuers could unfortunately only confirm the deaths of the two mountaineers.

The victims have not yet been formally identified at this time.
