Today, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced that work to clear snow from Guardsman Pass, nestled between Big Cottonwood Canyon and the Park City Ridgeline in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, is complete, and the pass is open to the public. The announcement is a remarkable achievement considering work only began on Monday, June 5th.

The pass is a short stretch of highway that’s nestled smack dab in the center of some of the Central Wasatch’s best backcountry terrain. The opening of Guardsman Pass (and Bald Mountain Pass) marks the unofficial start to summer in Utah. Both passes were open by May 27th last year.

UDOT wrote on Twitter this morning:

🚧 ROAD OPEN: Guardsman Pass #SR224 is now open for summer!

Reminders:
🚗 It’s a narrow road, please respect all travelers & do NOT park along the road
⚠️ Obey all signage & posted speed limits
🐶 No dogs are allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon (SR-190) as it is a watershed
