The Welsh town of Merthyr Tydfil has recently approved an ambitious mixed winter sports project. After a decision by the Welsh Government not to block the ambitious proposition, plans have moved forward to construct the UK’s longest indoor ski slope. The massive project, known as the Rhydycar West development, will also include both indoor and outdoor activity centers, up to 418 hotel rooms, possibly 30 woodland lodge units, around 830 car parking spaces, and a large water park.

Councilor Andrew Barry brought up that the council’s main reasoning for moving forward with the project is the welfare of the local community. In a statement to the local council, Barry stated: “We need positive economic solutions.” Luckily for the residents of Merthyr Tydfil, the project is estimated to create around 1,500 construction jobs and approximately 800 permanent jobs in the local community. The facility is also projected to become the official training base for the Welsh and Great Britain national Olympic and Paralympic snow sports teams.

The UK is currently home to six indoor snow sports complexes, with five more currently planned. The current largest, Chill Factore in Manchester, offers an indoor 590-foot ski slope. Rhydycar West’s slope will top out at an impressive 1,312 feet in length, over double the length of its nearest competitor.

The indoor slope will be located southwest of the A470/A4102 roundabout. Local Councilor Brent Carter expressed his unwavering support for the project. He told local news source Wales Online the project would “massively support and boost our economy in Merthyr Tydfil.” He went on to say he hopes to see the project become world-class destination of choice.  “Merthyr Tydfil needs Rhydycar West,” Carter said in a final statement.

While official plans have not yet been released, the ambitious project seeks to become a global winter sports destination. It is a challenging thing to blend community benefits with such a massive and expensive project, however, local engagement and excitement surrounding the development shows that the community is fully backing the development. The UK is not known for the most consistent winter weather conditions, so having a place for the community and national sports teams alike to recreate and train will be an amazing development for the country.
