A Ukrainian athlete has had to withdraw from the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics after her father was captured by Russian forces.

Biathlete Anastasiia Laletina was forced to pull out of the middle distance sitting event on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian paralympic committee told Reuters.

Laletina’s father is a soldier in the Ukrainian army.

The 19-year-old is still in Beijing and will fly out to Poland with the rest of her team at the end of the Games.

Ukraine is third in the medal table behind hosts China and Canada.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last month prompted the International Paralympic Committee to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from the Games.
