Sophie Woods is making human-powered speed history in the Alps.

This July, the ultra-runner embarked on a 2,000-kilometer running journey through the entire Alps. Now, over 15 days into her journey, she is more than halfway there and on pace to blow a current world record out of the water.

The current world record run time through the Alps for women is 38 days. The men’s record is 35. Woods is currently on track to finish it in 30.

From Trieste to Monaco

Back in June, Woods took to Instagram to announce she would attempt to conquer the Alps on foot. Only a handful of elite endurance athletes have completed the feat, and Woods is looking to join that group by trekking through one of the longest mountain ranges in Europe.

On her journey, the New Zealand native is following the famous Via Alpina route, a long-distance trail network spanning roughly 2,000 kilometers across the Alps. Her journey began in Trieste, Italy, and finishes in Monaco along the Mediterranean Sea. In total, her journey is taking her through eight countries: Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, and Monaco.

Not only is Woods battling distance, but she is battling ascent, too. Her route includes roughly 120,000 meters (393,700 feet) of ascent—the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest from sea level more than 13 times.

“It is the biggest thing I have ever done, and I’m super nervous for it,” Woods said in her announcement. “But I’d love all of the love and leg speed that you can send my way.”

Going for the FKT

Despite the immense challenge, Woods knew she wanted to go for the Fastest Known Time (FKT) from the get-go.

“My hope is to try and get the FKT, and I’d like to do it in 30 days,” she said in the days leading up to her run. “I think that’s enough time out running, but let’s see. It might be quite punchy to try and do that.”

With her current daily average of 63 kilometers, Woods is right on pace with her goal.

Just Woods And Two Partners

When many attempt a run like this, they have film crews and live trackers in tow. But Woods’ journey is much, much different. She is attempting the record with just two people by her side: her close friend and photographer, Zoe, and her partner, George.

“I am going to be supported by George and Zoe, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to keep you guys updated along the way,” Woods said on her Instagram video.

Over Halfway There

In the most recent update from Day 17 on July 21, Woods is currently 1,172.92 kilometers into the journey. With less than 850 kilometers left, Woods will need to average 63.6 kilometers per day over the next 13 days to reach her 30-day goal.

With a proper night’s sleep in a hotel last night alongside a hearty dinner, Woods is refreshed and ready to go for the last half of her journey.
