Utah’s Guardsman Pass, a mountain pass linking Park City and Big Cottonwood Canyon on SR-190, closed Saturday, October 4, after an early-season snowstorm brought significant snow to the higher Wasatch elevations. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) closed the road around 11:30 a.m. to ensure safety amid accumulating snow and rapidly changing conditions.

Following clearing operations, Guardsman Pass reopened as scheduled at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, after road crews determined it was safe for travel. UDOT made the reopening announcement on Sunday, emphasizing that the roadway had been cleared and urging motorists to continue using caution in the wake of lingering winter conditions.

The weekend storm resulted in several inches of accumulation at higher elevations, including six inches reported at Alta Resort and similar totals in upper-canyon areas. It also caused other mountain passes, such as Beartooth Pass in Montana, to close.

Peaking at 9,717 feet, the pass is inaccessible during the winter due to the area’s heavy snowfall and the pass’s lack of plowing services. UDOT has consistently enforced this seasonal closure to prevent accidents on the increasingly treacherous road as conditions deteriorate.
