Vail, CO Skier Dies of Asphyxia After Falling Off Chairlift & Being Suspended By Ski Jacket

“We are still investigating how this whole situation happened. According to our initial investigation, the deceased slipped through the seat of the chair lift and his ski coat got caught up in the chair. The coat ended up going up around his head and neck area putting his neck in a position that compromised his airway.”

– Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis told the Vail Daily via text

According to the Eagle County, CO coroner, 46-year-old Jason Varnish from Short Hills, NJ passed away after slipping off Chair 37 in Vail’s Blue Sky Basin and being strangled by his ski jacket on Thursday, February 13th 2020.

It’s being reported that someone administered CPR on Jason.

Due to this accident, the Blue Sky Basin was closed for the rest of the day on Thursday as well as today until 11:30am.
