The U.S. and Canada use a five-category estimation of the avalanche danger:

Low, Moderate, Considerable, High and Extreme.

The North American Avalanche Danger Scale is a tool used by avalanche forecasters to communicate the potential for avalanches to cause harm or injury to backcountry travelers.   1. It’s like if a stop sign said: we would like to advise you to consider ceasing forward motion at your earliest possible convenience to avoid a collision with cars that are approaching the same place at the same time at an oblique angle. how well would that communicate your traffic system.
