Anurag Maloo fell down a crevasse while descending from Camp III on Mount Annapurna, the world’s tenth highest mountain, on Monday, April 17, 2023. The Indian climber had fallen down a crevasse in Nepal at around 19,685ft (6,000m), just below the high avalanche zone. He had been descending when he had slipped and accidentally had grabbed the wrong rope.
His brother Aashish never gave up on finding his brother and after three days of relentless efforts by a massive team of rescuers, including many experienced Sherpas, Anurag was located. The rescue efforts resulted in this incredible footage of Anurag’s rescue. He was found in critical condition and had to be flown by helicopter to Manipal Hospital in Pokhara city.
Cchang Dawa Sherpa from Seven Summit Treks led the search and rescue operation and also shared incredible footage on his account on Instagram. Most mind blowing however is the footage from Adam’s helmet cam, which shows the awkward location Maloo was found in and just how incredible this rescue was.
On the same day that Anurag fell into the crevasse, Irish climber Noel Hanna perished on his descent from Annapurna, while two Polish climbers, Adam Bielecki and Mariusz Hatala had made it down safe and sound that day. However both of the Polish climbers ventured back out to find Anurag Maloo and it is Bielecki’s helmet cam that caught the incredible footage below.
Last year, Anurag Maloo had successfully climbed a mountain in the eastern Himalayan range in Nepal. He was on a mission to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000m and scale the world’s seven summits, to create awareness about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
According to updates from his brother, he has been showing signs of improvement. We hope he can make a full and speedy recovery.
