[VIDEO] Meteorologist Chris Tomer’s Mountain Weather Update for Mid-September: Welcome Snow

Meteorologist Chris Tomer is one of the most accurate weather forecasters out there. Being an avid skier himself, Tomer’s forecasts are unique in the sense that they tailor specifically for skiers and snowboarders and focus heavily on snowfall predictions. Today, in light of a recent snowstorm that deposited fresh flakes across portions of the western United States, Tomer has released a new mountain forecast that shows just exactly how the early season snow storms are tracking right now.

Light snow accumulation continues across British Columbia and Alberta above 7,500 feet on September 14, while residual moisture leaves a fresh white coat over Montana above 6,500 feet as the storm pattern pushes toward Utah and Colorado. The fresh snowfall follows an impressive early-season round that caught several key resorts by surprise over the weekend. At Washington’s Crystal Mountain, where summer operations are still scheduled to wrap up next week, 6-12 inches of measurable snow blanketed the upper mountain.

“Light snow accumulation continues in Alberta/British Columbia (above 7,500ft) and some residual snow in Montana (above 6,500ft). I also look at the storm track and 10-day UT & CO precip.” – Chris Tomer

Farther east in Montana, Big Sky Resort welcomed its first snow today, September 14, arriving right after runners finished The Rut 50K and the resort officially closed its summer 2026 season. Fresh powder coated the 11,166-foot summit, with the snowline creeping down to the Explorer Gondola mid-station at 8,200 feet. Just down the road at Bridger Bowl, webcams at the Red Chair showed almost four inches on the ground by morning. Across the Pacific Northwest and the Northern Rockies, autumn may technically be on the calendar, but the mountains are already giving winter.
