Last week, American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin shared her intentions to return to the FIS Alpine World Cup for the technical races in Åre, Sweden, on March 9 and 10.  Yesterday, however, the 28-year-old shared an update on her social media, where she admits that the comeback has been harder than she had anticipated. It is Shiffrin’s first knee injury since the skier ruptured her MCL in December 2016.

In the video she shared on Instagram, the American skier admits, “So, today was hard, which is not surprising. It was painful a little bit. I shouldn’t be pain-free at this point of course but that is what it is. That’s where I am right now. It’s just that, Åre is not that far away and I feel that a little bit and we’re doing the best we can.”

The American ski racer got injured in Cortina d’Ampezzo in January and recuperation from her injury has been taking longer than many may have thought. While Shiffrin did not rupture her ACL, MCL, or PCL, it appears the ski racer overstretched her MCL, causing her significant pain. Shiffrin has been working hard at rebuilding strength and stability in her knee but is at this point still in pain in training. Shiffrin has been training at Toblach/Dobbiaco, Italy, since last week, however, the athlete has been experiencing pain in her knee during the training sessions. Only time will tell if she can compete in just one week at the races in Sweden.

At the end of the video, the American skier shared excitedly that her rental is equipped with a piano and that she is using her spare time to learn to play a new song.
