A cold start across much of Maine yesterday morning, with many areas dropping below freezing, allowed Sunday River Resort to fire up their snow guns for their annual testing. Yesterday was officially the final day of summer.

According to the National Weather Service, it was 27 degrees at 6 am in Fryeburg. Lewiston, Sanford, and Waterville were all 28 degrees. It was 30 degrees in Wiscasset, reports WMTW.

Temperatures were in the high 20s at the top of North Peak at the resort, allowing them to run four snowguns on the Lower Downdraft trail.

Sunday River hasn’t yet announced an opening date, preferring to wait and see how conditions develop. They are regularly among the first ski resorts to open in North America for the season. When they opened on October 19th in 2015, they were the second North American resort to do so, a day after Killington, VT who were first. 2017 Sunday River opened 11/11, 2018 10/19, and 11/9 in 2019.
