US skier Nina O’Brien crashed hard just before the finish line in the giant slalom at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics yesterday. After clipping the penultimate gate, she lost control, sending her sprawling over the finish line.
Her competitors stood and watched in shock as O’Brien lay motionless. O’Brien was stretchered off, and it is feared she suffered a severe leg injury.
O’Brien was in sixth place and was one of many who crashed during the event, including Mikaela Shiffrin, who skied off-course and was disqualified.
On NBC, Lindsey Vonn said it looked like a leg break, possibly tibia and fibula, with ligament damage. The US ski team said that O’Brien, 24, was “alert and responsive.”
