Report from February 10, 2025
I rolled into Little Cottonwood Canyon early yesterday morning.
I met up with a buddy and realized I’d forgotten my skins…
Luckily, a friend at Alta borrowed me a pair.
While briefly at Alta in the morning, I’d gotten word that Main Chute on Mt. Baldy was going to open.
Perfect.
I decided to run up and ski Suicide Chute on 11,000′ Mt. Superior, then come back for Main Chute.
The skin track to the base of the chute was easy, smooth, sunny, and warm.
The boot pack up the chute was challenging, but there was a boot pack.
2 humans had skied it before me using verts.
I waddled and waded, swam, and climbed to the top in 1 hour and 34 minutes.
It was nice to be back in the sunshine on top.
I lingered not.
I was already thinking about Main Chute…
A quick sip of water, a few pics, planned my upper chute turns, and dropped in.
On my second turn, my right ski dug deep in the snow.
I pulled it out, lost my balance, and had a quick decision to make:
- Fall down and start over
- Point it straight downhill
I chose the latter.
The snow was deep and delectable.
It allowed for that quick burst of speed.
On the next turn, I mostly got it together.
By the second turn, I felt the wind in my face and a blast of confidence.
I skied the chute in under 60 seconds.
Definitely my fastest time.
I think…
The apron also held great snow, and I reveled in carving powder turns in the low-angle, sun-splashed terrain.
A quick walk back to my car led to a short drive to Alta.
I got the very last parking spot on the big ramp down to the parking lot.
I glided down the snowbank, crossed the lot, and hopped onto the Collins chair.
No lines.
I watched people shred their way down Main Chute as the chair ascended the Baldy shoulder.
Down to Sugarloaf and up to the Mineral Basin shoulder and the start of the boot pack.
It is usually about 20-30 mins of booting to reach the summit of 11,068′ Mt. Baldy.
I took a quick breath there on the summit and slid down to the top of Main Chute.
I waited in line for my turn and chatted with some kind, happy folks.
The chute was challenging with chalky, smooth snow up top, tight moguls in the choke, and well-spaced bumps in the open lower chute.
As the chute tightened at the bottom, the moguls rose up and gathered against me again.
Gasping for air, I battled those final mogul boss with all I had.
I skied it without stopping and nearly topped out my VO2 max.
Fun!
I booked it straight to the groomer and easy cruised down to the parking lot.
What a day…
Thanks, Utah!
