What Does It Actually Mean When a Ski Slope Is “FIS Homologated”?

You may have heard people say that a certain slope is a “FIS homologated course.” Maybe you’ve even used the phrase yourself, or nodded along confidently while secretly wondering what homologation actually means. If you’d rather be the person explaining it than pretending to know, here’s what the term actually means, and why it matters every single time racers push out of the starting gate.

While TV audiences and live spectators see the slope on race day for the first time, months of work has gone into preparation of the slope in the background, sometimes years. Before racers ever inspect a course, somebody has already walked every meter of it, measuring gradients, identifying hazards, planning safety installations, and deciding whether the slope is even suitable to host international competition. That process is called homologation. In legal and technical fields it refers to the official certification of something against a defined standard — the Greek word “homologeo” means “to agree” or “to approve.”

Importantly, homologation is different from “snow control,” which is a process in which the snow depth and quality is assessed roughly one week before an alpine World Cup race. Homologation says nothing about the snow quality but about the technical features of the slope.

In practice, homologation is the process through which the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) certifies that a race course meets every technical and safety requirement necessary to host international competition. Without it, there is no race. Not a World Cup. Not a NorAm in America or a Europa Cup in Europe. Not a FIS Open at your local mountain. Nothing. And that certification is surprisingly specific. A mountain isn’t homologated once and for all. Nor is an entire ski area certified for every discipline. Individual race courses receive separate approval for each event. A downhill course must be inspected as a downhill course. A super-G course requires its own certification. Giant slalom and slalom each have separate homologation standards and courses may only be approved a some of the four alpine disciplines. Homologation certificates issued by FIS remain valid for five years for speed events and 10 years for technical disciplines before inspectors return to evaluate them again.

“The fundamental purpose of homologation is athletes’ safety,” says Elena Gaja Des Ambrois, Chair of the FIS Sub-Committee for Alpine Skiing Courses, who has overseen the process since 2014. “Without this certification, no ski resort can host international races of any level.”

Most of that work happens during the summer. While ski racers are training in Chile or New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere or in indoor ski centers, homologation inspectors are hiking race hills in the Northern Hemisphere without a patch of snow. It may seem counterintuitive, but bare ground tells inspectors far more than a snow-covered slope ever could. Rocks, drainage channels, lift towers, tree lines, exposed terrain, hidden obstacles, emergency access routes, helicopter landing zones and potential avalanche paths all become visible. “We walk down the course together with the resort,” Gaja Des Ambrois explains. “We measure the width and gradient, identify every obstacle and determine how it can be protected. Sometimes obstacles can be removed. Sometimes they cannot, so we define exactly where safety installations such as A-nets, B-nets and air fences must be placed.”

The process extends well beyond simply deciding whether a piste is steep enough. Inspectors also determine start and finish locations, identify sections requiring earthworks or widening, evaluate evacuation procedures, calculate lift ride times, review timing infrastructure and assess everything from prevailing wind patterns to average snowfall. For speed events, inspectors often complete the survey alongside the venue’s regular downhill course setter, whose experience helps determine where racers are likely to carry speed and where additional protection may be required.

In many ways, homologation represents the first and possibly the most important layer of the safety system. “We are the first on the course, months before the jury and Technical Delegate arrive on race day,” Gaja Des Ambrois says. “Our goal is to provide the jury with the most detailed and complete information possible so they can conduct a safe and fair race.”

The numbers involved are impressive. FIS issues roughly 450 homologation certificates across the globe every year, with Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland and the United States accounting for nearly two-thirds of them. Yet inspectors travel far beyond traditional ski nations. Homologated race hills now exist everywhere from Morocco to South America, while China’s rapidly expanding indoor ski industry has added several certified venues in recent years.

Yes — even indoor ski centers have received homologation certificates. However, the lack of vertical means that these slopes can only hold entry-level FIS competitions. A World Cup Slalom race — the shortest of all Alpine races — requires between 120 and 140 meters (394–459 feet) of vertical depending on gender. The largest vertical drop offered by an indoor slope at this point is 90 meters (295 feet), which are in SnowWorld Amneville in France and Norway’s Snø. For now, indoor slopes remain a training and development tool rather than a replacement for classic mountain venues, however, homologation is important for training purposes, too, in order to ensure a safe environment for ski racers.

Homologation stretches across all FIS disciplines, be it cross-country, alpine, or freestyle. This ensures a consistent level of difficulty and safety standard across the globe. However, it is important to understand that this consistency does not mean that inspectors are trying to create identical race hills or courses. Kitzbühel should feel different from Alta Badia. Beaver Creek should never ski like Levi. Instead, homologation ensures every venue reaches the same safety standard while preserving the unique personality that makes each course famous. It does, however, attempt to ensure a certain degree of difficulty to make races of equal weighting across the World Cup.

So the next time you hear someone casually mention a “FIS homologated slope,” you’ll know it means considerably more than a steep piste with a finish hut and if you want to sound clever, you ask not only what discipline it is homologated for but also what level of FIS race. When it comes to World Cup competitions, you can be assured it means months of planning, detailed surveying, countless safety calculations, and behind-the-scenes work. All of it for one simple objective: to make sure the world’s best skiers and snowboarders can push the limits of the sport with maximum safety.
