Whistler Conditions Report: Chalky Charging

With Christmas behind us and the start of a new year ahead, Whistler is looking good.  For the last week it has stayed cold up on the mountain keeping things fresh and soft, even without any recent snowfall.  The wind has been blowing making for some nice wind loaded areas, and a few ice patches.  Snow is variable all over the mountain because of this.

It has been completely sunny for the last few days making for some awesome skiing.  You can go anywhere on the mountain as everything is open.  The snow coverage in the lower mountain is still low, below Jersey or Emerald chairs.  However, this is compensated by the awesome alpine conditions we have.

When it is super nice out, I like to go to Whistler and lap Peak and Harmony chairs which have been super fun the last few days.  The snow on steeper sections of the mountain is chalky and windblown pockets of good snow, or scrapped out ice pockets.  I would compare this snow to the perfect big mountain competition snow.  It is soft enough to hit drops, and variable enough to keep you on edge while going fast.

Peak
Peak chair was super fun with good snow all around.

I have not ventured out into the backcountry yet, but have heard that there is a bad wind slab layer on certain aspects.  Over the last week there have been three cases of the Whistler Search and Rescue having to evacuate people due to avalanche related injuries.  Have fun out there but be safe!

Hope everyone is enjoying the New Year and is excited for some more snow to come!
