Alyeska ski resort in Girdwood, Alaska received 6″ of new snow overnight. ย This new snow made the North Face fun, albeit a bit scratchy on the lower half, and upper bowl ended up about the same. ย The weather was snowy most the morning before the sun poked out and made an appearance starting around 2pm.
The new snow was very dry and temperatures were cold today. ย This combo lead to you feeling the hard “reef” underneath the new pow most anywhere you went off piste. ย The groomers were great, though as they’d been groomed then got the 6″ on top. ย There’s nothing as smooth as ripping powder groomers.
We spend most the morning skiing powder groomers before giving the North Face a crack. ย Only Chuck’s gate and the gate just below the tram were open. ย We opted for Chuck’s into Tram Pocket and the snow was about a foot deep in there. ย You could link together a few great feeling turns before hitting the reef again. ย The bottom half was pretty reefy. ย When you drop into Tram Pocket, it’s not too long of a run before you hit the Autobahn groomer that takes you back to the tram, so it was well worth skiing the North Face a few times today for that upper section.
The nicest factor today may have been the crowd. ย There was no one at Alyeska and everyone who was there got their fill.
