Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina had a strong season in 2014. ย Of the 8 weeks I skied in Bariloche this summer, 4 of them were powder.
It’s true, we had a low snowpack this year and the lower mountain never had any snow. ย The upper mountain is where all the good terrain livesย and up there, we had plenty of snow this southern winter.
I arrived durinย the last days of July, 2014 to a violent, 4-day stormย that kept the mountain closed for 5 days. ย When the mountain finally opened on August 3rd, there was 6 feet of new snow up high and dry ground down low. ย It was a gorgeous juxtaposition of worldsย with the skiing up high beingย immaculate. ย From that day on, it was an adventure.
BARILOCHE, ARGENTINA 2014 BREAKDOWN:
From August 3rd until August 13th, we skied powder everyday in Bariloche as a series of storms marched off the Pacific Ocean and into Patagonia.
From August 14th to August 31st, we experienced a mix of spring skiing, mini-powder days, dense fog, ripping winds, and one great spring day at the stellar cat skiing operation Baguales.
From September 1st until September 8th, we had some great mini powder days.
From September 9th until September 15th, we had our best storm and powder of the season. ย Cold, dry, good powder and lots of it. ย It stayed cold and the snow lasted. ย We skiedย all over the place including a very cool trip to the snowmobile/hut operation Mallin Alto.
From September 24th to September 30th, we ripped great powder right until closing day. ย This was a very special gift. ย In bounds terrain and the lift accessed backcountry skiedย splendiferously – especially for that late in the year.
Overall, it was a stellarย year in Bariloche, Argentina. ย The late snow in September was the cherry-on-top erasing any memories of the dry spells in August. ย September was powdery, fun, and empty here.
Bariloche 2014 Highlights included: ย many laps in La Laguna’s great, Squaw-like terrain – 5 sick days in the Alaskita backcountry – 2 days in the Tower Chute backcountry – discovery of “Secret Chute” – a few days in the Van Titter Valley backcountry – a day cat skiing at Baguales – a day snow machine skiing in Mallin Alto – and the most important thing: ย 4 weeksย ofย solid powder skiing.
This was one of the best ski seasons in Bariloche of the five I’ve spent down here.
I could use a pow day, and a quilmes after would be mighty fine right about now!
