NOAA Issues “Avalanche Warning” for Wasatch Mountains, Utah Today

NOAA and the Utah Avalanche Center have issued an Avalanche Warning for the Wasatch mountains of Utah that is in effect now through 6am Friday.

Alta is reporting 12″ of new snow overnight and a 50″ storm total.

Avalanche danger is rated as “HIGH” in the Wasatch and the all zones in red below.

Travel in the Wasatch backcountry or any of the zones listed in red is not recommended today.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE
FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER.

THE FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER IN SALT LAKE CITY HAS
ISSUED A BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING.

* TIMING...THROUGH 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING.

* AFFECTED AREA...THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS INCLUDING THE
  WASATCH...THE LOGAN AREA MOUNTAINS...AND THE WESTERN UINTA
  MOUNTAINS.

* AVALANCHE DANGER...HIGH WITH NATURAL AVALANCHES OCCURRING.

* IMPACTS...RECENT SNOWFALL AND STRONG WINDS HAVE CREATED A HIGH
  AVALANCHE DANGER. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
  STAY OFF OF AND OUT FROM UNDER SLOPES STEEPER THAN 30 DEGREES.
