18-Wheeler Truck Ignores Road Closure, Gets Stuck in Tahoe’s Emerald Bay Switchbacks

A commercial driver learned the hard way this week that road closures in Lake Tahoe aren’t just suggestions. According to California Highway Patrol’s South Lake Tahoe unit, the driver bypassed a clearly marked “Road Closed” sign and attempted to navigate the steep, snow-covered switchbacks of SR-89 in Emerald Bay—an area known for both its scenic beauty and frequent winter closures.

The vehicle didn’t make it far. It became stuck in the tight turns, requiring a heavy-duty tow and prompting road safety officials to issue a public reminder: road closures are in place for a reason. In addition to the towing cost, the driver was cited for ignoring the closure.

“Driving around a Road Closed sign is extremely dangerous, not to mention illegal,” CHP wrote in a social media post.

Located near several Tahoe-area ski resorts, Emerald Bay is a popular access point for backcountry skiing and alpine adventures, but winter driving conditions can quickly turn treacherous. The SR-89 closure is common during storms or icy periods and ignoring it risks not only damage and fines—but serious safety consequences.
