Exercise, being active, and participating in sports are both healthy for our minds and bodies and can help reduce stress and depression. It also increases social and team-building skills among other things. For many of us, it is a way to stay in shape and have fun, while others may need to exercise for other health reasons. Regardless of the reason why we choose to exercise or play a sport, numerous studies are proving that it is good for our bodies both physically and mentally.

This is just as true for people who are not disabled as it is for people who do have disabilities and that example will be on display at Winter Park, Colorado, this weekend. The Wells Fargo Cup is the longest-running professional ski race in the country and serves as a signature fundraiser for the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD). It is the 48th consecutive year the event has been held and features three days of skiing, racing, networking, and most importantly to ensure that those living with disabilities can have fun in the Great Outdoors.

The Wells Fargo Cup will be held this weekend, Feb. 24 through Feb. 26, at Winter Park Resort and will feature multiple events and activities for both athletes and spectators. Events scheduled for the Wells Fargo Cup include:

  • Kicking off the Annual Ski Cup is the World Disabled Invitational on Thursday morning. Professional disabled athletes from around the world compete in a race unlike any other.
  • Next up is the AEC Challenge featuring architects, engineers, and contractors racing to claim the coveted Outrigger Trophy.
  • The Corporate Challenge on Friday is the premiere race in which skiers and snowboarders from corporate teams race against each other for bragging rights and prizes. A NSCD Competition Center athlete races with each team for cash prizes to help finance their training for the next Paralympics.
  • Watch the NSCD Special Olympics team take on the same course as the professionals during the Kidโ€™s Snowplow Sprint on Friday.
  • Join us on top of the mountain at the Rendezvous Colorado Snow Boot Soiree that evening to celebrate and support our adaptive programs. Experience exclusive aprรจs-ski delights with exquisite cuisine and drinks as we kick up our snow boots amidst the enchanting ambiance of our transformed European Ski Lodge.
  • Capping off the event is the Saturday Farewell Breakfast. Join us for Bloody Maryโ€™s before skiing the rest of the day with friends and family.
  • Other weekend events include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, hospitality tent, and more.

The National Sports for the Disabled (NSCD) is one of the largest outdoor recreation and sports agencies whose mission is to provide therapeutic activities and events for people with disabilities. It began in 1970 by providing ski lessons for children with amputations from Children’s Hospital in Denver. Every year, more than 3,000 children and adults with disabilities participate in programs concentrated around sports. The NSCD provides training in a variety of year-round sports and activities to people with physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral diagnoses.
