This past Monday afternoon, March 25, skiers and snowboarders were left disappointed after multiple crashes took place and icy road conditions closed down Little Cottonwood Canyon Road in Utah. It was reported by the Unified Police Department (UPD) that at least two vehicles rolled over in the canyon due to the slick conditions. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported as a result of the accidents.
Alta and Snowbird were inaccessible after 12:00 pm (MST) on March 25 following a mutual decision made by the UPD and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to close down State Route 210. With this being the only road to and from Alta and Snowbird, it was an unfortunate decision to be made with all of the powder chasers eagerly anticipating a surreal day on the slopes.
As of March 28, road conditions on State Route 210 are open but still dicey, and drivers need to be extra cautious if they plan on spending Easter weekend in Utah. The snow is only going to continue falling for Alta and Snowbird, as they are projected 30+ inches through this upcoming Monday, April 1, according to OpenSnow. OpenSnow has also reported that Alta has accumulated 43 inches in the past five days and Snowbird a close second with 38 inches as of March 28.
Therefore, skiers and riders have to keep an eye on the UDOT website for any road updates throughout the weekend. The conditions have been surreal this year for Alta and Snowbird, and it does not look like the fun is stopping anytime soon for either resort.
