Early-season openings bring excitement for skiers eager to hit the slopes, but they also come with inherent challenges, particularly related to snow coverage and safety. The experience of a 17-year-old skier at Brighton Resort, Utah, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of early season skiing and snowboarding. On Monday, November 25, the teenage skier crashed below the chair lift and suffered a head injury that led to a harrowing rescue.

Thanks to the accident occurring in plain sight below the chair lift, the unconscious and lifeless teenager was spotted quickly. An off-duty paramedic fortuitously discovered the unconscious teen and began life-saving measures. Ski Patrol was quickly alerted and took over CPR, ultimately reviving the skier. Jared Winkler, Brighton’s Marketing Director, recounted the incident: “Fortunately, the skier regained consciousness and stood up, visibly shocked and disoriented. It took a moment to calm him down and explain what had happened.”

The skier was transported via toboggan to the Brighton Clinic for further evaluation and treatment. His father was notified, and the teenager was expected to be released later that day.

Brighton Resort is renowned for its dependable snow and stunning terrain. It averages 500 inches of snowfall annually and features 66 runs across 1,050 acres, with an elevation of 10,500 feet at its summit. This season, Brighton has already received an impressive 81 inches of snow, demonstrating why Utah is hailed as having the โ€œGreatest Snow on Earth.โ€ However, even with such snowfall, early-season conditions remain precarious.

Utahโ€™s rugged, rocky terrain can pose significant hazards when snow coverage is still developing. Skiers are advised to exercise caution during these “low-tide” conditions, staying vigilant for rocks, roots, and other obstructions. Adhering to trail closures and skiing within marked boundaries is essential to minimize risks.

As the ski season progresses and snow coverage deepens, resorts like Brighton will continue to deliver on their promise of world-class skiing. Until then, early-season enthusiasts are reminded to prioritize safety alongside their excitement for the slopes.
