Fresh snow fell at Southern Africa’s two ski fields – Afriski in Lesotho and Tiffindell in South Africa – marking the start to the 2018 ski season! The snowfall was too light to create a solid base, but the cold temperatures are perfect for snowmaking.
Snowmaking plays an important role at South Africa’s resorts. Even with top elevations of 2900 meters at Tiffindell and 3222 meters at Afriski, snowfall can be extremely rare, and skiing natural snow is not guaranteed each season. The season lasts from June through August.
The resorts will be kicking off their winter seasons with two annual events:
- Afriski will be hosting its “WinterFest” Music Festival June 7-10
- Tiffindell will hold the FIS Snowkidz Festival on June 23
With resorts in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt (indoors), Lesotho, and South Africa, it is the only continent to have ski areas in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
I would love to go here

There is another ski resort (Matroosberg close to Cape Town) operated by Ski Club of South Africa with access permitted only to the club members and their guests. They have 2 permanently positioned, petrol-powered ski lifts plus 2 portable ski lifts that can be moved to any part of the mountain, i.e. wherever the best snow might lie! But they do not make artificial snow.
