Ski racer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has suffered a significant setback to his comeback after doctors diagnosed a serious inflammation in his left shoulder. The Norwegian speed specialist had crashed in January during the Lauberhorn race in Wengen, Switzerland, which resulted in a serious cut to his leg and dislocation of his shoulder. The dislocation also severed ligaments and caused damage to the athleteโs rotator cuff.
Kilde shared on social media that he had been experiencing increased shoulder pain in the last couple of weeks. He initially had dismissed the pain as a normal reaction to resuming training after recovering from his injury, but it turned out to be a serious infection that required surgery and six weeks of IV-administered antibiotics. Kilde is cautious about any prognosis for his return to skiing, stating, โAfter those 6 weeks weโll see what the next steps will be.โ
Kilde was initially treated at the Steadman Clinic in Colorado before being transferred to Norway for further treatment. His fiancรฉ, Mikaela Shiffrin, was by his side during his hospital stay in Colorado. After the surgery and initial treatment at the Steadman Clinic, the athlete returned to his home in Innsbruck, Austria.
Norwayโs team doctor Trond Floberghagen shared in a statement by Skiforbundet, the Norwegian Ski Association: โThe main focus is now on curing the infection. He [Kilde] will continue with antibiotics and other treatments at home in Innsbruck. It is far too early to say anything about the prognosis, but this will require a new rehabilitation period.โ
