Report from November 25, 2024
Today was my first inbounds day at Alta this season after 10 fun uphill preseason days.
Alta is legit right now.
Collins and Wildcat are open with 1,800 vertical feet of good skiing.
I cranked laps – mostly on the groomers – with an obnoxious smile.
Off-piste was a bit risky with rocks and logs here and there but it was doable.
It was chilly at 20ยบF on top with a stiff breeze.
No lift lines whatsoever, great coverage, and edge-able snow (note: I am on brand-new skis with sharp edges).
After a couple of laps, I met up with ski patroller/guide extraordinaire Big Mountain Babbitt and chased him around until 3 p.m.
Once the sun went behind Mt. Baldy, it got pretty dark out there.ย
I’d recommend skiing before 2 p.m. if possible for the best light.
Today was a great day overall, and I skied long enough to tire my legs and get a feel for what it’s like to go fast again.
My new Meier “Prospector 106” skis were terrific in today’s conditions with their snappiness and turny-ness resulting from their “5-point” design.
Oh, and I also took 15 of my old and brand-new Scott skis to “The Gear Room” in Salt Lake City, UT.
If you need new skis for a great price, please swing “The Gear Room” and grab a pair.
I really want these skis to make their way back into the community and be enjoyed ๐
